An effective school board plays an important watchdog role in keeping your local school on track and setting policies that affect your child and your school.
Board role and organization: The Metropolitan Board of Public Education consists of nine elected members, one member being elected from each of the nine school districts. The term of office is four years, with the terms staggered so that no fewer than four members are elected every two years.
In addition, two student advisor representatives from the Student Advisory Council serve with the Board. The Board is engaged in policy governance, which is a form of governing that requires the Board to set goals as it relates to end results for students, engage in Board development, and hold the Director of Schools accountable for meeting its goals.
Regular meetings of the Board of Public Education are held at the Administration Building of Metro Nashville Public Schools, 2601 Bransford Avenue, at 5 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. Members of the public are invited to speak to the Board at this meeting. (Sign up to speak below.)
On the fourth Tuesday of each month, the Board holds work sessions. These meetings are open to the public and are televised on Metro Nashville Network, a local cable community access channel.
Public Participation
All speakers are limited to three minutes. The length of time may change at the chair’s discretion. For additional information, please see the Board Appearance Guidelines.
